CHARITY PROJECTS

One of the goals of LIQS is to give back to the community through its charitable projects.

For the past several years, LIQS has provided quilts to Camp Adventure, a camp on Shelter Island for children battling cancer and their siblings.

LIQS participated in QuiltPink, organized by Better Homes and Gardens American Patchwork and Qulting Magazine, and donated 16 pink and white quilts which were auctioned on eBay to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation which funds breast cancer research.  The auction began in April, 2007.

In June of 2005, 70 childrens quilts and comfort pillows were donated to Winthrop Hospital's Cancer Center for Kids in Mineola.  Members also created a wallhanging for the waiting room.

In 2003, 100 baby quilts were presented to the special pediatric unit of St. John's Hospital in Inwood, New York.
LIQS members also donated 200 baby quilts to the Long Island Development Program in 2001 and 80 baby quilts to Mama's House in Malverne in 2002.

Clearly, one of the benefits of joining LIQS is the friendships formed while volunteering for charity work.

Many members met weekly to produce 50 quilts for the expansion of Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park.

For many years Long Island Quilters' Society has participated in United Cerebral Palsy's Festival of Trees.  Members have created quilted ornaments and decorated a tree which is then auctioned off to the highest bidder. The tree for 2008 was named Best Handmade Tree

On April 21, 2004 members of LIQS traveled to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside where 160 quilts were presented to the AMT Children of Hope Foundation - Baby Safe Haven.

Shown are samples of the quilts being made for woulded military personnel.

On February 14, 2005 several LIQS members went to the Windham (NY) Ski Resort to meet servicemen and women who had been wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan and who had been invited by the Adaptive Sports Foundation to learn to ski. The service personnel received gift bags which contained quilts made by LIQS members and other items donated by the VFW Auxiliary.
